Pregnant in Portugal

The information about how pregnant women in Portugal should act during emergencies has recently been updated with the creation of the SNS Grávida Line as part of the national health service's emergency plan. This service was introduced to address the challenges in accessing obstetrics and gynecology care due to resource limitations in certain maternity wards.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Calling the SNS Grávida Line: Pregnant women experiencing emergencies should first contact the helpline by dialing SNS 24 (808 24 24 24). This dedicated line is managed by trained nurses who use advanced algorithms to assess the situation. The line ensures guidance tailored to the urgency of the case.

  2. Receiving Directions: The helpline directs callers to the nearest maternity hospital or emergency room equipped to handle their situation. It also ensures that the hospital is available to provide the necessary care.

  3. Emergency Backup via 112: For life-threatening situations or where immediate transport is required, dialing 112 remains the recommended option to connect with emergency responders, akin to services like 911 in other countries.

Understanding the updated emergency care procedures for pregnancy in Portugal is essential for staying prepared during critical moments. The introduction of helplines like the SNS Grávida Line reflects ongoing efforts to enhance healthcare accessibility and coordination. While opinions about the new system may vary, having clear steps to follow can help ensure you receive the care you need when it matters most.

I hope you find this information useful. My mission is that expat women find the clarity and confidence they need to navigate their pregnancy and parenting journey here in Portugal.
