How Many Ultrasounds Will I Get During My Pregnancy in Portugal?

Here’s a general timeline of ultrasounds during a low-risk pregnancy, although the number and timing of scans can vary based on your specific situation:

  • First Trimester (11-13 weeks): You will typically have your first ultrasound between 11 and 13 weeks.

  • Second Trimester (20-22 weeks): The second ultrasound, often referred to as the morphology scan, occurs between 20 and 22 weeks.

  • Third Trimester (30-32 weeks): In the third trimester, you might have a growth scan between 30 and 32 weeks to monitor the baby's growth and position.

How Many Medical Appointments Will I Have?

Here's an overview of what to expect:

  1. Monthly Check-ups: Typically, you will have monthly check-ups until the 28th/30th week of pregnancy. These appointments include routine checks of your weight, blood pressure, and the baby's heartbeat.

  2. Bi-weekly Check-ups: From the 28th to the 36th week, appointments usually become bi-weekly. Your doctor will continue monitoring your health closely as your due date approaches.

  3. Weekly Check-ups: After the 36th week, expect to have weekly check-ups until your baby is born.

★ Between the 36th and 40th weeks of gestation, all pregnant women should have at least one medical appointment at the hospital where they intend to give birth. At this stage, the family doctor redirects the pregnant woman to the hospital, where she can have the medical appointment with the obstetric doctor and also perform the Strep B test.

Essential Lab Tests During Pregnancy

Here are the common tests you can expect, but check the freebie for the complete detailed list:

  • First Trimester Blood Tests: These include blood type, Rh factor, and screenings for infections like HIV, hepatitis B, and syphilis. A complete blood count (CBC) will also check for anemia and other health indicators.

  • Glucose Screening: Around 24-28 weeks, you will have a glucose screening test to check for gestational diabetes.

  • Group B Streptococcus Test: In the third trimester, usually around 35-37 weeks, you will be tested for Group B Strep, which is important for your baby’s health during delivery.
